A native of San Juan, Texas, Cristela Alonzo is an American comedian, actress, writer, and producer. She is the creator and star in the ABC sitcom Cristela. Her role and participation in the sitcom made her the first Latina woman to create, produce, write, and star in her own US primetime comedy.

Alonzo is the youngest child and daughter of Natalia Gonzalez, her mother. Her mother used to work double shifts at a Mexican restaurant for about 20 years. When Natalia, Alonzo’s mother, was pregnant with Alonzo, she left her abusive husband and raised her four children alone. Cristela revealed that she never met her father, Alberto Alonzo, who died in 2009. In 2002, her mother died.

Alonzo is the youngest of four children. She has two brothers and one sister. Her sister is called Julisa Maria Alonzo while her brothers are Eloy Eduardo Alonzo and Ruben G Alonzo. Her sister got married at a young age and hence she spent much of her childhood hanging out with her brothers.
Since she was unable to afford her school fees, Alonzo dropped out of school and went on to live with her sister. at her sister’s place, she took care of her mother who was sick at the time, and her sister’s children.
