Brian Cox Biography

Born in Dundee, Brian Cox is a Scottish actor. He has worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre, where he gained recognition for his portrayal of King Lear. 

Brian is also known for his supporting roles in Rob Roy (1995) and Mel Gibson’s Academy Award-winning Braveheart (1995). In 1986, he portrayed Hannibal Lecter on film in the cult classic Manhunter. Brian won two Olivier Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. He was also nominated for a  British Academy Television Award and three Screen Actors Guild Awards. His role as Nazi war criminal Hermann Goering in Nuremberg won him  Primetime Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series and nominations at the Golden Globe Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Brian also earned an AFI Award nomination and an Independent Spirit Award nomination for his performance in L.I.E. In 2002, he earned an Emmy nomination for his guest-starring role on the hit series Frasier. Brian was appointed a Commander of the British Empire in 2003. He received his second SAG Award nomination as part of the ensemble cast of Adaptation. Brian currently stars as media magnate Logan Roy on HBO’s critically lauded series Succession. this role already earned him the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series. He was also nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series.

Brian won two Olivier Awards for Best Actor for his performances in Titus Andronicus for the Royal Shakespeare Company and Rat in the Skull for the Royal Court, and two more Olivier Award nominations for Misalliance and Fashion. He also earned the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Actor, and Drama Desk and Outer Critic’s Circle nominations.

Brian has authored three books, Salem to Moscow: An Actor’s Odyssey, The Lear Diaries, and his autobiography Putting the Rabbit in the Hat. In 2004, Brian was honored at the 2004 BAFTA Scotland Awards with an Outstanding Achievement Award. In 2016, he was awarded an Empire Icon Award by the Empire Magazine. The UK Film Council named him one of the Top 10 powerful British film stars in Hollywood in 2007.

Brian’s mother Mary Ann, was a spinner who worked in the jute mills and suffered several nervous breakdowns during Cox’s childhood while his father Charles was a police officer and later a shopkeeper. He died when Brian was eight years old. Cox has four siblings including Betty.
